"Solutions"

Sometimes the best ideas are born of necessity, such as a room that lacks a focal point, has an unusual shape, or needs to accommodate a variety of uses.  Often the creative solutions to such problems result in some of the most interesting design projects.  Here are but a few:

When this client chose to eliminate several interior walls on the main floor of the home, the resulting space was dramatic but lacking in privacy.  The solution was a nine-foot tall custom folding-screen that created an intimate eating area off the kitchen.  The screen uses five exotic woods designed to match the Arts and Crafts style of the furnishings.  It can easily be removed to accommodate large parties.

This small sitting area off the kitchen had no focal point and barely enough space for any seating.  Three doors entered the space; a fireplace on an angle took up one wall, and a bar the other.  The solution was to display a small quilt by sewing it onto a linen mat and framing it.  That in turn became the inspiration for an octagonal custom area rug that visually anchors the space.  Small tables and other accessories play up the design theme.

The furniture layout of this room called for two sofas facing each other, one in front of a bay window.  The crown molding in the window almost touches the top of the window trim, making a simple window treatment difficult to mount.  The resulting solution:  a custom glass folding-screen.  The design of the screen was inspired by the area rug.  It adds visual interest and dimensionality in a way that cannot be accomplished with any window treatment.  It, in turn, inspired the stained glass surrounding the front door.  The owner's initials are intertwined so that they are legible from both directions.

This client likes to entertain and particularly to have formal dinners for eight to ten people.  The design challenge:  what type of dining room table would comfortably sit that many people yet not appear massive?  The solution is an innovative custom marble table design with a glass top.  The unique shape allows for ten people to sit comfortably, without a line up of chairs (seating two on each end with three on each side).
