Commercial
/ Automotive

While
not specializing in any one building type, twenty-one per cent of BQD’s
projects have been automotive. We have designed over 40 Jiffy Lubes from Baltimore to
Virginia Beach, numerous stand-alone automotive repair facilities, as well as
serving Precision Tune Auto Care as its corporate Architect in designing new
repair and car wash prototypes.

BQD
has brought unique design solutions to ordinary problems.
In the gas station located in Columbia, Maryland, the facility had to
satisfy the new town’s Design Review Board in the exterior “look”, while
still satisfying its functional and budget needs.
In addition the client wanted constant weather protection for his customers
between the self service islands and the cashier's window. The canopy over
the self service islands, provided by the major oil company, was designed to
move depending on climate conditions while the cashier's window was located
inside a stationary structure. This
simple problem was solved with a barrel vaulted skylight. This allowed the skylight to act as a hinge between the
stationary building and the somewhat moveable canopy while providing the desired
weather protection to the customers.

While
performing franchise work sounds very repetitive, the fact is, each franchisee
operates slightly different from one and other and often has different zoning
and local appearance requirements. Therefore,
each Jiffy Lube maintains its own uniqueness.

And
finally, BQD has been at the forefront of a relatively new concept in automotive
repair facilities – Auto Malls. These
are facilities where multiple repair facilities share a common building, site,
parking, and service areas while maintaining their own store.
BQD has designed several of these facilities, the largest to date being a
41,000 square foot, 82 auto bay facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
